How long does Bathtub Refinishing Last?
That is a great question! "How long should bathtub refinishing last"? || I wish the answer could be as straight forward as saying 5 years, 10 years, 15 years. However, the truth is, all of those answers are correct. Once the coating is applied it is up to the owner to determine how long it will "live". First, remember it is a durable copolymer coating. Under normal use it is designed to last close to 20 years. So let's look at things that destroy a refinished tub.
- Bathmats - #1 killer. bathmats with suction cups will destroy a porcelain tub by pitting, rusting, discoloration because it traps soaps, shampoos, hair products and holds it next to the surface to simply eat away at it! I usually will include a rubberized non slip coating at no charge or very little charge and if you still find thats not sufficient then look for a bathmat without suction cups. Then hang the mat over the side of the tub and allow everything to drain and dry.
- Any type of cleaner that can be used on an acrylic or fiberglass tub is usually a good rule of thumb for a refinished tub. Nothing Abrasive, No Comet, No ajax, No s.o.s. pads, No Soft Scrub. Anything abrasive is going to wear it down over time and then you loose the gloss, the protection wears away and it will have to be fixed.
- I have past customers that love to bathe dogs in the tub but the dog hates it! So the dog would claw and scratch it's way out. Dogs are very powerful, those sharp claws combined with power and an animal scared wanting away will scratch the tub.

So how long will a refinished tub last?
Well, I use a permanent bonding system callas fusion lock. I make sure the surface is 2 mils thick. I Use a synthetic porcelain that is rated for a 20 year life span. So if you clean the tub properly, diluted bleach, lysol bathtub cleaner, scrubbing bubbles, all of which are great. Then you will get 15 - 25 years out of the refinished product before it needs to be refinished again!
The best rule of thumb is to treat the tub like it is an acrylic tub. Porcelain is fired at over 1800 (f) we can not mimic that in the home. So although the surface looks like porcelain it will need to be taken care of with non damaging, non abrasive cleaners and invest in a bath caddy to store soaps and shampoos. They are inexpensive and prevent concentrated bathing products from sitting on the surface 24 hours a day! Dallas Bathtub Refinishing
